Entry #2: The Anchor Incident

Vintage painting of sea captain writing in diary by candlelight with text Captain's Diary

August 18th – Nafplio Port

Not all sailing adventures happen out at sea. Sometimes the real action is right in the harbour.

We had just returned from a full day sailing cruise in the Argolic Gulf and were easing into our spot in Nafplio port when I noticed the anchor had caught on the chain of a larger boat next to us. It was stuck tight, and the only way to free it was to go in myself.

I grabbed a mask, kicked off my shoes, and jumped straight into the water. No time to waste. A few dives later, I managed to untangle the chain and set the anchor free. It was heavy work, but with some patience and a steady hand it came loose.

Back on deck, I secured the anchor and tied the boat without further trouble. Another small challenge solved, another reminder that in sailing, the captain’s job is never finished until the boat and everyone on board are safe.
