A Week on the Water: Family Sailing Charters from Nafplio

Reducing Environment Impact - Nafplio4Sail Sustainability

The Argolic and Saronic Gulfs, all at your own pace

Most families who visit Nafplio fall a little bit in love with it. The Venetian old town, the fortress looming over the rooftops, the harbour in the evening — it has that effect on people. But what if Nafplio wasn’t your destination, but your starting point?
A multi-day or weekly sailing charter from Nafplio opens up one of the most family-friendly cruising areas in all of Greece. Short distances between destinations, sheltered seas, a coastline loaded with ancient history just waiting to be explored from the water. Even car-free islands (Hydra, Spetses etc.) where kids can roam freely

Why Nafplio is the Perfect Home Base
Most sailing holidays in the Argo-Saronic begin from Athens. But starting from Nafplio puts you ahead of the game — closer to the Argolic Gulf, with Poros, Hydra, and Spetses already well within reach on day one. You skip the crowded Athenian marinas and begin your trip already in the most beautiful part of the region.
And you return to one of the most charming small cities in Greece. That first evening back in Nafplio harbour, after a week at sea, walking the cobblestone streets for a proper dinner — that’s a memory your family won’t forget.

Is It Right for Families?
Absolutely. The Argo-Saronic is widely considered the best sailing area in Greece for families, and for good reason:
Calm conditions. The gulf is sheltered from the strong Meltemi winds that affect the Cyclades and other open-water areas. Typical summer winds are a gentle Force up to 3–4 beaufort, which means comfortable sailing even for kids who’ve never been on a boat before.
Short hops. Most legs between destinations are between 10 and 25 nautical miles — a few hours of sailing at most. Kids don’t spend hours at sea; they spend hours swimming, snorkelling, and exploring.
No cars. On Hydra and Spetses, kids absolutely love this — it feels like a place from another century.
Real Greek life. These islands haven’t been taken over by mass tourism. Waterfront tavernas, fishermen at the docks, cats sleeping in doorways — this is still the Greece people come looking for.

When to Go
May–June and September–October are ideal for families. The sea is warm, the winds are reliable without being strong, the ports are busy but not overcrowded, and the light in late September is extraordinary. July and August are peak season — more life in the ports, but also more heat and more people. All seasons have their magic.
