Entry #1: The Catch of the Evening
August 5th – Just outside Nafplio, Argolic Gulf
Today was one of those perfect days for sailing in Nafplio. Clear skies, steady wind, and guests who were excited to explore the Argolic Gulf. We set out early on our private sailing trip, visiting small coves, swimming near the cliffs, and anchoring close to Karathona Beach. By the time we headed back toward the port, the sun was already sinking low.
Once the guests left the boat, the marina quieted down. That is when Kostas, one of our skippers, had an idea.
“Let’s head out a bit more, see if the fish are biting.”
We took the sailboat back out past the breakwater to a calm spot just outside Nafplio. The water was still and the wind soft. This part of the Argolic Gulf is ideal for fishing trips with plenty of life under the surface and views of the old fortress behind you.
We caught two wild sea basses and a good-sized tsipoura (sea bream). Fresh, clean fish that you will not find in the market. We lit the small BBQ on deck and grilled them right there, with only olive oil, lemon, and sea salt. Simple but exactly right for a meal at sea.
As we ate, the lights of Nafplio flickered on behind us and Palamidi Fortress stood high above the town. The view was almost as good as the food, exactly the kind of moment you get on a real Greek sailing experience.
We stayed out a little longer, talking quietly, watching the sunset fade into night. Days like this remind me why our sailing charters are more than just trips. They are memories you carry home.
