Entry #4: The October Swim
October 3rd – Argolic Gulf
October in Nafplio does not feel like autumn. The days are warm, the sea holds its summer heat, and the sunsets at this time of year seem sharper and brighter than in July. With fewer boats on the water, this season gives us a sense of having the gulf almost to ourselves.
During today’s cruise, I anchored in a quiet bay near Tolo and suggested a swim. At first, some of the guests laughed. “In October? Isn’t it too cold?” one asked. I assured them the water was warmer than they imagined. Slowly, one after another, they slipped into the sea and were surprised by how comfortable it felt. Soon the sound of laughter and splashing filled the bay.
Only one guest remained on deck, shaking her head. She watched the others enjoy themselves, clearly tempted but hesitant. After a while, with the whole group calling her in, she finally stood, took a breath, and jumped. When she surfaced, the look on her face said everything. Later she admitted it was the best swim she had ever had.
For me, that is the reward of sailing in autumn. Guests arrive thinking October marks the end of summer, but they leave knowing it is one of the best times to be here. Warm seas, calm days, and sunsets like nowhere else; October in Nafplio is not the end of the season, but its hidden highlight.
